Pasadena Public Library is seeking a Consultant to train Library and Growing Together PASadena site staff on emerging and best early childhood literacy practices that are rooted in early childhood development, including early literacy practices delivered in a virtual environment.  In addition to trainings, recordings and other supporting documents are to be provided so staff may continue in-house training and evaluation.  Further, the Consultant will provide messaging around early childhood development, early literacy, and literacy engagement for caregivers for use on websites and social media, with a focus on parental strengths, and the Five Protective Factors in the Strengthening Families approach. All work must be completed within the grant year, which runs through March 31, 2022.

Award will be granted based on consultant experience, prior work in child development and early literacy, and ability to deliver within the time frame, and cost.

All deliverables are due by March 31, 2022.

Bids up to $8,000 will be considered.  Awards may be split depending on responses.

  • 2 virtual trainings, presented to library and non-library early childhood practitioners, that will be recorded for future use on the following topics:
    • Early childhood development and how development relates to early literacy best practices, with
      • Training objectives
      • Training agenda
      • Training outcomes
      • Accompanying handouts in digital form, that can be used for future training by the library, that would include:
        • Ages and stages guide
        • Development stages and corresponding early literacy practices chart
        • Onboarding Training objectives for staff
  • Best practices for virtual early literacy programs and engagement, including information on determining and assesses outcomes that includes:
    • Accompanying training documents in digital formats for future use by the library, including:
      • Resources Guide
      • Best Practices guide
  • A compilation of messaging regarding early learning that can be used in social media postings in digital format

Consultant requirements:

  • Knowledge of early childhood development for ages 0-5
  • Knowledge of early literacy best practices
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in early literacy in libraries and related fields
  • Experience performing storytimes for ages 0-5 in an in-person and a virtual setting preferred
  • Familiarity with Library resources and setting a plus
  • Understanding of social media and virtual engagement a plus
  • Experience with training Understanding of the Five Protective Factors through the Strengthening Families approach is a plus
  • Experience in creating and documenting training tools that can be used for a wide-range of library and non-library staff
  • This is a grant funded project and all project expense and activities must comply with the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant restrictions
