The Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia is pleased to announce the Connally Family Distinguished Professorship in Literacy Education at the rank Professor beginning August 2022. We seek an individual with outstanding accomplishments in research in the area of early reading/literacy development. Within our department’s overall emphasis on multiple and comprehensive approaches to languages, literacies, teaching, learning, families, communities, and society, the Connally Family Distinguished Professorship in Literacy Education will reflect the department’s distinguished history, complement its current research emphases, and make important and forward-thinking contributions to the future of the department and its ideals.

The successful candidate will provide intellectual leadership in the Department of Language and Literacy Education and beyond and will conduct high-impact research in early reading/literacy development. We seek an established scholar who has a proven and ambitious research agenda, including developing proposals for external funding, overseeing project implementation, sharing research through scholarly writing and presentations, mentoring graduate students, contributing to the preparation of teachers for effective reading instruction, and collaborating with faculty on research activities related to the mission of the department. The candidate will also join us in our commitment to diversifying higher education and further serving our diverse programmatic and student needs and interests.

The candidate will hold tenure in the Department of Language and Literacy Education in the Mary Frances Early College of Education and contribute to the research, instructional, and service missions of this academic department.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must have been tenured at a prior institution and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Established program of research related to early reading/literacy development
  • Established record of securing external funding for research
  • Outstanding national and international reputation in the field of Reading or Literacy Education
  • Eligibility for tenure and appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education 

Duties/Responsibilities

To teach graduate and undergraduate courses. To provide intellectual leadership in the Department of Language and Literacy Education and beyond and will conduct high-impact research in early reading/literacy development. To maintain/develop a research agenda, including developing proposals for external funding, overseeing project implementation, sharing research through scholarly writing and presentations, mentoring graduate students, contributing to the preparation of teachers for effective reading instruction, and collaborating with faculty on research activities related to the mission of the department.
